One of the real delights at Rutgers is being able to work with the DIMACS Center. In particular, I’ve worked closely with Prof. Rebecca Wright, who is the current director of DIMACS. Unfortunately for us, she is moving to Barnard to start a new CS program. So… now we need a new director! Here is the ad…

The DIMACS Center based at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ is seeking a Director.  This is a five-year renewable appointment as Director as well as a tenured full professor position in an appropriate Rutgers department.

Founded in 1989 in the first class of NSF Science and Technology Centers, DIMACS catalyzes and conducts research and education in mathematical, computational, and statistical methods, algorithms, modeling, and data analysis, as well as their applications in the physical, biological, and social sciences and various engineering disciplines.  DIMACS’s multi-year special focus programs address research themes that require topical expertise in these areas, have potential for societal impact, and are poised for advance. Its education programs include materials development for high school and college classrooms, an extensive summer undergraduate research program, and teacher education programs. DIMACS also leads the CCICADA Center for Advanced Data Analysis, which was founded as a Department of Homeland Security University Center of Excellence.  Based at Rutgers, DIMACS’s partners are Columbia, Georgia Tech, Princeton, RPI, Stevens, AT&T, Avaya, IBM, Microsoft, NEC, Nokia, and Perspecta. One of DIMACS’s strengths is its ability to modify its areas of emphasis and programs as times change and interests of its internal and external partners change, and the new Director will be expected to provide leadership and vision in determining such new directions.

The Director will:

  • serve as the scientific and administrative leader of the center;
  • guide the scientific and educational vision of the center;
  • lead the center’s efforts to attract funding from public and private sources to support the growth and long-term sustainability of the center;
  • identify and pursue opportunities for building research and educational collaborations across the Rutgers faculty, with our partners, and with others

Candidates must have a strong research record suitable for a tenured appointment and leadership position at Rutgers in a field such as mathematics, computer science, operations research, statistics, data science, or applications of these disciplines to other areas of science and/or engineering. The candidate should display breadth of scientific and educational interests and have demonstrated leadership abilities. A successful record of grant funding is strongly preferred.

Postdoctoral Associate at DIMACS

DIMACS, the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, invites applications for various postdoctoral associate positions for 2017-18. Applicants should be recent Ph.D.’s with interest in DIMACS areas, such as computer science, discrete mathematics, statistics, physics, operations research, and their applications. There are four positions available:

  1. a one-year postdoctoral associateship investigating modeling of anomaly detection in multi-layer networks,
  2. a two-year associateship in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, NJ emphasizing theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics,
  3. a position associated with the Simons Collaboration on Algorithms and Geometry which also emphasizes theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics and could be hosted at Rutgers/DIMACS,
  4. a two-year associateship in theoretical machine learning in the Department of Computer Science at Rutgers.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Rutgers University is seeking a dynamic and motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to work on developing distributed machine learning algorithms that work on complex neuroimaging data. This work is in collaboration with the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, New Mexico under NIH Grant 1R01DA040487-01A1.

Candidates with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics or related areas with experience in one of

  • distributed signal processing or optimization
  • image processing with applications in biomedical imaging
  • machine learning theory (but with a desire to interface with practice)
  • privacy-preserving algorithms (preferably differential privacy)

are welcome to apply. Strong and self-motivated candidates should also have

  • a strong mathematical background: this project is about translating theory to practice, so a solid understanding of mathematical formalizations is crucial;
  • good communication skills: this is an interdisciplinary project with many collaborators

The Fellow will receive valuable experience in translational research as well as career mentoring, opportunities to collaborate with others outside the project within the ECE Department, DIMACS, and other institutions.

The initial appointment is for 1 year but can be renewed subject to approval. Salary and compensation is at the standard NIH scale for postdocs.

Multiple Postdoc Openings at USC

Prof. Urbashi Mitra is looking for multiple postdocs. Given that this is the time of year when the future looks murkiest, these are great opportunities!

I am seeking multiple post-doctoral researchers are sought with expertise in one or more areas: Communication Theory, (Statistical) Signal Processing, Controls, Information Theory, and Machine Learning. In particular, the following expertises are of interest: structured inference (sparse approximation, low rank matrix completion, tensor signal processing, graph signal processing); multi-terminal information theory, or information theory at the boundaries of control or signal processing; distributed control, consensus methods and partially observable Markov Decision Process modeling and algorithms; modern optimization methods; or biological communications, signal processing or information theory.

The successful applicants will be expected to perform innovative translational research, mentor PhD students, give oral presentations, write journal papers, and participate in grant writing and project management. There will be significant opportunities for research leadership and interaction with funding agencies.

Signal boost: IBM Social Good Fellowship for data science

This announcement came via Kush Varshney. IBM is launching a new fellowship program. This came out of his work on DataKind and Saška Mojsilović’s work on Ebola. It’s open to students and postdocs!

I am pleased to let you know that Saška Mojsilović and I are launching a new fellowship program at IBM Research related to data science for social good. We are offering both 3-month summer fellowships for PhD students and full-year fellowships for postdocs. The fellowship webpage and link to apply may be found here.

Fellows will come work with research staff members at our Yorktown Heights laboratory to complete projects in partnership with NGOs, social enterprises, government agencies, or other mission-driven organizations that have large social impact. We are currently in the process of scoping projects across various areas, such as health, sustainability, poverty, hunger, equality, and disaster management. The program is intended to allow students to develop their technical skills and produce publishable work while making a positive impact on the world.

Postdoctoral opportunity at NYU CS/Global Health

Post-doctoral opportunity in developing novel computational approaches for disease surveillance. The laboratory of Dr. Rumi Chunara in Computer Science & Engineering, and the College of Global of Public Health at New York University is seeking highly motivated researchers to develop and study crowdsourced and point-of-care data for understanding infectious and chronic disease in populations worldwide.

Ideal postdoctoral candidates will have a Ph.D. with a strong background in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science or related field. Expertise in statistical machine learning and/or data mining are required. Preferred requirements for this position include experience designing software applications and/or storing, retrieving, and analyze large datasets. Experience with R, Python, SQL, JavaScript is preferred. Experience in hacking with cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, Hadoop) is a big plus. You must demonstrate an interest or experience in working with biological data such as genomic sequence, syndromic surveillance or physiological data.

This is an exciting research area and New York City provides great opportunities for networking and support of innovative work. Our group is engaged in many high-profile studies in collaboration with startups and other groups. The selected post-doc will be supported and encouraged to generate high impact publications, gain experience in supervising students and in grant writing if interested. Signal boost: Postdoc positions at Tel Aviv University

Two postdoctoral research positions are now available in the Department of Electrical Engineering – Systems at Tel Aviv University, Israel, in the fields of information theory and interactive communications. Starting immediately for up to two years. Funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

We offer two postdoctoral fellowships for researchers in the broad area of information theory, with special emphasis on interactive communications. Specific topics of interest include single-user and multiuser communications with noisy feedback, iterative-refinement coding for two-way channels, interactive coding and its relations to dynamical systems and stochastic control, resource-limited interactive communications, distributed function computation, and combinatorial aspects of multiuser interactive communications. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with Dr. Ofer Shayevitz and his group, and is funded by a grant from the European Research Council (ERC).

The positions are available immediately and for a period of up to two years. Applicants should hold a PhD in either electrical engineering, computer science, or mathematics, and are expected to have a strong background in information theory or closely related fields. Remuneration is highly competitive and commensurate with skills and track record.
