The Pacific Collegium, directed by Christopher Kula, and Schola Cantorum San Francisco, directed by John Renke, assemble the Bay Area’s finest choral forces to perform Thomas Tallis’ lush, rich and rarely-performed forty-part motet in celebration of John Renke’s forty years of artistry in the Bay Area. Also performed- William Byrd’s Mass for 5 Voices and selections from the Great Service.

When I left work yesterday evening I found that someone had tucked a little sprig of flowers into my gear shifter:

death and taxes
Upon a preliminary inspection of my tax documents this year, I made myself a martini (Plymouth Gin, dry, up, with a twist of lime). My income from last year is tripartite (approximately) — fellowship, wages as a TA and RA, and self-employment as a singer. After reading a patronizing walkthrough of part of the tax code (“the artist temperament simply does not interface well with the exacting rule-filled world of federal and state taxation” — WTF?), I realized that the combination of more complicated income and saying goodbye to TurboTax for price-gouging has left me with no recourse but to slug it out mano-e-mano with the good old inimitable inimical 1040.
It seems that I must file a Schedule C with professional activity code 711510 “Independent artists, writers, & performers” and Schedule SE for self-employment. It warms the cockles to be called a “professional” and “independent artist” but the additional headache of schedules and forms (no doubt in triplicate) makes me expecto resurrectionem mortuorum et vitam venturi saeculi. Komm, suesser tod. Come, butler, come fill me a bowl of the best. And if you do bring me a bowl of the small, then the devil take butler, bowl and all!

In going through Google hits for my name I came across this reference to the ExploraVision contest that I did in high school. It seems so long ago, those trips to the Viscount Den for huge Pepsi’s, pulling all-nighters to get AfterEffects to correctly composite our video, having play performances and going immediately afterwards to NCSA to work… Looking back on it, we were completely insane. But I think that experience helped break previous attitudes I had about how days and work should be structured, and how much you can really do in one day if you put your mind to it.
It is pretty cool that we’re in the Congressional record though…
the giraffe ate it
As I had suspected, the phone was in the park in San Mateo. But it was next to the large giraffe statue. A nice couple from Menlo Park picked it up and called me. Hooray!
